Kenya is a safe place for tourists. Some very safe tourist destinations are Nairobi, Mombasa, Naivasha, and Maasai Mara. However, like any country, some areas are riskier than others. Those areas are high on crime, terrorism activities and political instability.
Relatively More Dangerous Areas
Parts of Northern Kenya
- This areas are Mandera, Wajir and Garissa
- The areas border Somalia and experience attacks by Al-Shabaab militia group. The militia is based in Somali.
- The group occasionally unleash terror threats, undertake roadside bombs or lead armed ambushes.
- Tourists from U.S. and U.K. are often given travel advisories against non-essential travel to these counties.
Some Parts of Lamu County
- The most affected area is near Boni Forest
- Most areas of Lamu Island can be safe and peaceful. However, the mainland and areas near Boni Forest have experienced occasional militant activity.
- People visiting Lamu are usually encouraged to fly directly to the island and avoid traveling overland through risky regions.
Informal Settlements in Major Cities
- The areas are parts of Kibera and Mathare in Nairobi
- The areas experience high levels of poverty, petty crime, and occasional political unrest.
- These activities make the areas less safe, especially for foreigners unfamiliar with the environment.
- To be safe when visiting here one should get a local guide or visit through an organized community tour.
